Road through Chełmska Hill Road through Chełmska Hill

  • Address : ul. Słupska, Koszalin
Few people know the history of the old road to Sianowo which was built by the November insurgents captured and held in the Prussian Köslin. Their struggle is commemorated by the “Path to Freedom” (Droga do Wolności) monument which was uncovered in 2005 at the gates to the Sanctuary of Mother of God Thrice Admirable on Krzyżanka hill. The monument is a massive boulder with a verse from the Polish patriotic song “La Varsovienne”, written in 1831 by a French poet J.F.C. Delavigne: “Fly, our eagle, in high flight, Serve the glory, Poland, and the world!” There is also a dedication plaque: “For the Polish soldiers - November Insurgents, interned by Prussian authorities in 1831, builders of the road through Chełmska Hill. The Nation.” As you ride towards Sianowo on the new, comfortable bike path (which leads all the way to Kłos), you might spot a small, red brick tower. It is a historic pump station. Now in ruins, it used to supply water to Koszalin from the intake on the Chełmska Hill. Interestingly, the Museum of Water in Koszalin has a section of the wooden pipeline which used to run under what today is Słupska street, supplying water to the old market square. Today, Słupska street is a favourite among the local road cyclists. Every Thursday (with the exception of Winter months) at 5.00 pm, cyclists gather there to practice. The event is known as “Road Thursday”.
