Medieval defensive walls
Even though only a small fragment of Koszalin’s defensive walls has survived, their original shape is well visible from the bird’s eye view, giving us a clear idea of how large Medieval Koszalin was.
The best preserved sections of city walls can be found in the Dukes of Pomerania Park.
In Kazimierza Wielkiego street, near the historic building of the State Fire Brigade headquarters and the cellars of Asher brewery, you can see an interesting section of the wall, built partly with millstones.
The walls were originally 7 m high and had three entrance gates to the city: the Mill Gate (Brama Młyńska), the New Gate (Brama Nowa) and the High Gate (Brama Wysoka). Unfortunately, none of them has survived. Once the walls lost their defensive value, they were gradually dismantled for construction material, particularly after the great fire of 1718.
