Walrus Monument in Mielno Walrus Monument in Mielno

  • Address : ul. Kościuszki, Mielno
Mielno is often called the best spot for ice swimming in Poland. Known as polar bear dipping in English, in Polish this peculiar pastime is known as “morsowanie”. The name was derived from the word “mors”, which is Polish for walrus. Hence in 2010 the walrus monument was erected in Kościuszki street at the main entrance to the beach. The walrus serves as a reminder that the beach in Mielno regularly hosts the International Ice Swimmers Convention. In 2015, the event was highlighted by setting the Guinness World Record in the largest polar bear dip with 1,799 swimmers taking the plunge. Interestingly, the record was set just one day after uncovering the monument. The walrus sculpture was created by a well-known artist from Poznań, Robert Sobociński.
